R. A. Edwards & Partners Ltd specialises in providing a broad range of services for our clients. The company has over 40 years’ experience in Design and Build, New Build, Refurbishment and Maintenance. We work with Private Clients, Government Organisations, Local Authorities, Police, NHS trusts and directly for Schools. We also work for Commercial, Industrial and Retail companies principally throughout the West Midlands. We are somewhat unique by the fact that we have over 35 local employees. This means we can invest in our workforce, whom our clients trust and rely upon, to complete projects of the utmost quality, on budget, on time. Where there is a requirement for the use of subcontractors, we use the very best and have developed long standing relationships with those who share our work ethic and professionalism.

To achieve our desired level of performance, we have to have quality throughout all aspects of the business, but it doesn’t end there….Ethics and Social Values are equally important to us.

Our Social Values

We are a Stafford based, family owned business, which has been delivering construction projects all over Staffordshire for over 40 years. We pride ourselves in supporting our local community and are an equal opportunities employer. We directly employ 35 local people, both professional and trades, with whom we seek to maximise their personal development by internal and external training to maintain current and gain additional qualifications. Indeed, investment in training has become a key quality control target.

Investment in our workforce is extremely important to us to maintain employee job satisfaction, but also ensures that the business grows organically through continued development and long term employment.  This increases efficiency, enabling us to be competitive, ensuring that we deliver quality construction projects for all our clients every time, and so that we continue to be a leading value for money business.

Wages are well in advance of the living wage and that in return helps us maintain a workforce which is skilled, experienced, and above all proud to work for the business. This commitment means we actively wish to retain our older employees, as they pass on valuable skills and experience to younger employees particularly those on company apprenticeships, and even local school children on work experience schemes under appropriate supervision.

In difficult economic times, we protect our employee’s welfare by finding work to keep them employed.  We have done this over many years by being flexible and adapting to changing markets, but also through our innovation to develop new opportunities and our desire to meet customer needs. Networking with local businesses in Staffordshire ensures that we are regularly updated on the changing economic environment.

We invest heavily in the infrastructure of the business to support our growth and to protect the core business practises, further supported by the long term relationships we have with our local suppliers and subcontractors, who we encourage to follow similar business practises to our own.

Strong financial control enables the long term vision to succeed, and having invested in the latest IT systems we ensure that we are a responsible business with regards to the payment of our employees, sub-contractors and suppliers. We maintain a prudent approach on financial matters to ensure the long term security of the business, and to ensure that our payments are made on time.

Ethics are therefore a key aspect of our business. From the welfare of employees, the prevention of bribery and corruption, the pride in performance, the highest stakeholder satisfaction levels, the procurement of materials and the overall environmental impact of the business. Reduce, reuse and recycle is a core philosophy, and we aim to minimise our environmental footprint by promoting clean sites, vehicle sharing, good maintenance and waste management.

The business has grown strong over many years to put us a leader among our peers. We aim to continue to lead in the challenging times ahead by firmly supporting our business principles, the shared vision with our employees, stakeholders and the local community.

Health & Safety  

Understanding and recognising our H&S responsibilities is paramount to our business. We adhere to all relevant legislation including the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, in addition, we are also registered with CHAS.

Having a safe and risk free environment for both employees, clients and the public at large, is integral to how we run sites. We have a comprehensive Health and Safety Policy which is communicated to all, and as part of our continuous improvement, all management and site staff receive full training, which is recorded and updated, with refresher courses undertaken as required. Our policy is reviewed annually and revised to reflect any changes in legislation.

As a company we expect our employees, subcontractors and suppliers to comply with our Health and Safety Policy and best practices. We employ external consultants to monitor and asses the way we work, in order that we are operating in a safe a way as possible, whilst being compliant with law in every aspect. We also invite all employees to offer their feedback.


We have an organisational structure experienced in handling projects ranging in value from £50 to £2 million.

We also directly employ approximately 30 on site based construction workers, who consist of Site Foremen, Bricklayers, Joiners, Plasterers and Labourers.

We promote continual personal development for all employees. We have a long track record of encouraging CITB apprenticeships. Many of our current site based construction staff having completed their apprenticeship with the company, are now suitably qualified and experienced craftsman within their trade.

R.A. Edwards & Partners Ltd aim is to keep sub-contractor labour to a minimum on all our projects. We believe that this will ensure a good level of training and therefore the highest possible standards of workmanship for our clients.

We maintain a record of all our employees’ training and have a policy for continual personal development. As part of this continual improvement programme, our employees have received and have the opportunity to participate in a variety of training courses. These include:

  • NVQ Level 2 and 3 – Bricklaying
  • NVQ Level 2 and 3 – Carpentry
  • PASMA Mobile Tower Training
  • CPCS Plant and Equipment Operator Training
  • IPAF Operator Training
  • Asbestos Awareness Training
  • Emergency First Aid Training
  • Site Supervisors Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS)
  • Site Managers Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS)
  • NEBOSH National Construction Certificate
  • BSc (Hons) Construction Management

In addition all our site operatives have been DBS checked to work with both vulnerable Adults and Children. In occupied premises, all employees wear identification badges.

Environment & Law

R. A. Edwards & Partners Ltd. complies with all environmental legislation and ensures that all employees involved understand the legislation that affects them. All directors/employees recognise the need to reduce environmental impact in the carrying out of our duties:

  • Managing its operations in ways that are environmentally sustainable and economically feasible by the responsible use of energy and water and exploiting opportunities to maximise efficiency. Ensuring environmental risks are properly identified and dealt with in a safe and timely manner.
  • Develop a relationship between our suppliers and contractors so that we all recognise our environmental responsibilities.
  • Promote waste minimisation by recycling or finding other uses of by-products when economically viable.

We are aware that our business activities impact on the environment especially when visiting client sites. We plan to minimise our carbon footprint by working towards the following objectives,:

  • By using local suppliers and bulk buying products to reduce the amount of unnecessary journeys for small orders.
  • Regularly service our company fleet to maintain optimum fuel efficiency
  • Route plan journeys to avoid unnecessary mileage
  • Encourage our employees to drive responsibly
  • Use of the internet, phone and email where possible to avoid unnecessary site visits
  • Recycle as much as possible when materials can no longer be used.

ISO 9001

We have recently introduced a Quality Programme within the business and are working towards achieving the ISO 9001 accreditation. Whilst many of the records, policies and procedures have been in place for a long time we recognise the need to formally record and maintain such information and are striving to complete this for all aspects of the business to ensure we are offering the absolute best level of service we can to all stakeholders.
